Manage Your Executive Career, Here’s How

Blog, Business, CEO, Leadership, News, TipsAugust 31, 2016suzanne

In today’s complex, global environment you need to assume control of your personal growth as the future rests in your own hands.  It is self-evident even more today to prevent your personal obsolescence.

This is the most competitive business global business environment in history and the pace of change is only increasing.  Many types of jobs are now being automated, creating algorithms for tasks, automating work by establishing a set of instructions to follow to one conclusion, that is, one algorithm for solving it, a newer class of poor and uneducated is evolving.

Leaders, executives and knowledge workers must tune into the fast pace of change to ensure their personal growth development  is aligned with the external environment as an urgent necessity. As many executives  focus on their current role, too busy to take in the constant change happening around them while  being vulnerable to the next round of restructuring and reduction in head count.at the expense of developing their capabilities.

On the other hand while software engineers, scientists, angel investors and others make their livelihood from innovation and new disruptive technology, they are placing knowledge workers at the height of their careers at risk of being displaced by seismic global business shifts.

New business skills are emerging  while structural changes in employment add to the fact that organisations will be focused on reducing risk and increasing profits;  all the more urgent to stay current sharpens.    Those who are not on top of their game and prepared for how the game is evolving, questioning  traditional forms of career development and  leadership, will be left behind..

Prepare for how the game is evolving

Here are three top ways to make personal growth your top priority.

1. Take responsibility for your own growth

Be forward-thinking and look for training opportunities that are helpful for building networks, seeing things from different viewpoints, ideas and frameworks.  Look for exposure to different parts of the business and be open to greater learning to gain exposure.    Let go of unhelpful habits and become disciplined in honing new skills.   Many successful  leaders understand the principle of making growth a habit, taking time for reflection, making time for growth opportunities.

2.  Create your own luck

Expand not only your job related skills but develop as a leader, chase personal growth, take on more responsibility, build strong networks  and broaden your understanding of business along the way.   As you develop greater choices  emerge more readily for you as you stay on top of your game.  Luck or destiny?    Perhaps luck has little to do with success.

3.  Seek bosses who help you grow

Find an interested boss and consider how that boss  might contribute to your growth.  Managers
do vary, some are more willing than others to give people stretch assignments. Those trial-by-fire experiences are great crucibles for personal growth, especially when combined with thought-provoking coaching.  Consider changing jobs if your current boss is limiting your growth.

Stay Relevant

The future of your careers rests in your hands.  Growth is about improving and engaging with the changing world around you.
