Recruitment methodology may have changed but what has not changed over  the decades is the need to engage,  search, select and hire the best people for your team and your company.   Whilst technology has enabled availability of a mountain of data, what it cannot do easily, or well,  is identify and evaluate resumes as ‘quality candidates’ with the right skill sets, attitude, values or fit with the current culture of the organisation.  To complicate the process further, specific searches expose challenges  when interviewing candidates face to face.

Would you be able to determine categorically within an hour or two, how well this person would perform on the job and assimilate seamlessly into your culture? How would you determine their  potential success within the next 2 to 3 years in your company?    It takes great skill, knowledge, experience and ability to work with these questions in the recruitment of best talent.

Hiring Wisdom

What is the inherent hiring wisdom in the search?  There isn’t any really, it comes down to diligence, experience and knowledge, top recruitment skills are both an art and a science.  Typically to become really skilled at anything takes a number of years, and that applies to recruiting.  Of course some people will be more predisposed than others, but selecting the right people, hiring them, motivating them, training them is an expensive business.    Methodologies may aid the process, but it is only another layer of complexity and too much reliance on analytics requires several other layers of complexity and abilities to interpret results. Ask any university graduate who has to analytically interpret results, particularly statistics.   As we all know, knowing and understanding people is not an exact science.

Good people don’t work for average people

Ultimately when searching for best talent think about:

  1. How well do you understand and define your own organisational culture and people within it?
  2. What changes, if any,  would you need to make in your organisation to hire the best talent?
  3. How do you expect candidates to demonstrate, that is convince you,  they will be successful in your culture?
  4. What threats and opportunities do you need to exam?
  5. What criteria do you use to evaluate the relationship between the fit of the candidates’ skills, attributes, capabilities, attitude within your current culture and the role.

Recruiting the Best Talent

Recruiting involves a number of people both internally in the organisation such as the CEO, line manager, human resources manager, recruitment manager to externally using specialised recruitment consultancies and various other channels.  It takes time to understand and evaluate exactly what is required and this needs an investment of time and money between all parties.

Bringing on board the best talent is critical to the overall success of your company.  Equally important is working with, and using the skills of the best ‘consultants’  to their full capacity, to assist search, selection, motivation and development of the the right talent to work with  your team, and your company.
